What is Coffee Processing?

Coffee processing refers to the methods used to transform freshly harvested coffee cherries into green coffee beans, ready for roasting. It involves removing the layers of the cherry-skin, pulp, mucilage, and parchment—to reveal the seed (bean) inside. The most common methods are natural (dry), washed (wet), honey, and wet-hulled, each affecting the coffee’s flavour, sweetness, acidity, and body. Proper processing is crucial for preserving quality and enhancing the final cup’s taste.

What is Coffee Ratio?

Coffee ratio refers to the proportion of coffee grounds to water used during brewing. It determines the strength and flavour of your coffee. A common standard is the “Golden Ratio” of 1:17, meaning 1 gram of coffee for every 17 grams (or milliliters) of water. For stronger coffee, use a lower ratio like 1:15, and for lighter coffee, use a higher ratio like 1:18. Adjusting the ratio allows you to customise your brew to your taste and brewing method.

What is referred to as ground coffee?

Ground coffee refers to coffee beans that are roasted and then crushed into small particles, making them ready for brewing.

What is the Hario V60?

The Hario V60 is a popular coffee brewing tool from the Hario company, based in Japan. It is a cone-shaped dripper with a 60-degree angle and spiral ridges, designed for making pour-over coffee. Many people mistakenly think all cone-shaped coffee brewing devices are V60s, but that is not true.

What are the top pour over devices?

Some of the most popular pour-over devices around the world include:

  • Hario V60 – Known for its distinctive cone shape and spiral ridges.
  • Chemex – Recognized for its elegant glass design and uses thicker filters.
  • Kalita Wave – Features a flat-bottomed dripper with wave-shaped filters.
  • Clever Dripper – Combines pour-over and immersion brewing for a unique flavour.

These devices are favored for their ability to bring out rich and nuanced flavors in coffee.

Instant coffee vs freshly brewed coffee?

Instant coffee is made by drying brewed coffee into a powder or granules that dissolve quickly in hot water. It’s convenient and quick but often lacks the depth of flavor found in freshly brewed coffee. Freshly brewed coffee is made directly from ground coffee beans using methods like French press or pour over, resulting in a richer and more aromatic taste that you may not have experienced before.

Does a beginner need a coffee grinder?

This is quite a controversial and debatable question. My short answer is no, a coffee grinder isn’t essential for beginners. I recommend starting by ordering coffee from a reputed roaster. While placing your order, specify the grind size based on the brewing equipment you intend to use, so the roaster can grind it for you before dispatch. Once you’ve gained some experience through trial and error and feel ready to elevate your coffee-making skills, you can consider investing in a grinder. However, keep in mind that choosing the right grinder is equally important and can be a bit tricky.
